A timeless, sophisticated Italian cocktail perfectly balancing bitter, sweet, and botanical flavors with equal parts gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth.
| 1 oz | London Dry Gin | A juniper-forward gin holds up best against the bitter Campari. |
| 1 oz | Campari | |
| 1 oz | Sweet Vermouth | Carpano Antica Formula or Cocchi Storico Vermouth di Torino are excellent choices. |
| 1 cup | Ice | For stirring, plus one large cube for serving |
| 1 piece | Orange peel | About 1 inch wide and 2 inches long, pith removed |
Fill a mixing glass about two-thirds full with ice.
~1 minPour the gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth into the mixing glass.
~1 minUsing a bar spoon, stir the mixture briskly and smoothly for 20 to 30 seconds until well-chilled.
~1 minPlace a large ice cube into a rocks glass (Old Fashioned glass). Use a Hawthorne strainer to strain the chilled cocktail into the glass over the fresh ice.
Hold the orange peel over the glass, skin-side down, and gently squeeze it to express the aromatic oils over the surface of the drink. Drop the peel into the glass as a garnish.
